Good until it stopped dead after 20 months' use. First -and last- Sharp
Yes, one year and nine months was as long as this one lasted.

Up until this afternoon, the Sharp R-402JKT was just part of the kitchen, with handy features and hot performance. I mean it heated up stuff WAY faster than most package directions suggested. Popcorn and baked potatoes were just right using the 1-button menus.

Cold coffee to hot in 48 seconds. This unit saw daily use but very light service. Not a family of five cooking everything in it. A family of one heating up leftovers and coffee.

Today, I'd tossed in some leftovers for lunch, hit the 1-minute button, it lit up, the turnable started to move, the magnetron took some power and... dead.

Black face, no indicator lights, no display, no interior power, dead, D.O.A. Nada, zip. It has ceased to be. This microwave is not sleeping. Power outlet checks good for power in both outlets.

I suspect the magnetron has died and sucked out any interior fuse mechanism that was placed inside to protect against actual fires. So now what?

Cost of the machine averaged over 20 months has been roughly five dollars per month. Not too bad. But older microwaves have been known to last 15+ years, so no excuses as far as this being "experimental technology".

The closest repair facility is 30 miles round-trip, a one-hour drive here in the Seattle area. Labor is not included in Sharp's "extended warranty". Do you want to spend two hours delivering, picking up this item? Do you want to pay for labor on a unit that failed within two year's time of light use? What if it dies again the next day? How long will it take to fix it?

See you at the dumpster, Panasonic coming up.

I love my Microwave
I purchased this microwave after my old one died. Now I wish it had died sooner. Quick cook times and I love the short cut keys. This microwave is incredible user friendly and made for use!

Great Microwave
I have had several microwaves in my time and I always go back to the Sharp models. Highly recommended.

It didn't last.
We bought this from Amazon in April 2008. Great price... arrived promptly. It broke this past weekend... the light in the inside turns on, but the motor won't turn on. It has a warranty for 5 years on the Heating element, so I called 2 Sharp approved repair centers. It will cost 89.00 trip charge, just to diagnose the problem. One company applies the $89.00 to the cost of the repair, the other adds labor and parts to that.

So, for our family it was not a bargain.

good basic microwave
I bought this microwave to replace my previous Sharp R-1449. This one is deeper, more plastic, and slightly more powerful. It seems reliable (only have had it 6 weeks), has a good vent and good stove lights. I wish it had a night light and a switch to stop turntable rotation though one can get around it by removing the turntable. My biggest disappointment was that it utilizes a different mounting plate than my previous Sharp microwave.

I gave it four stars b/c it does the job and it was inexpensive compared to other manufacturers. Incidentally, mounting instructions were very good.

great!
great microwave at great price. i bought one from amazon.com last month for $199. it arrived in one week. no shipping charge. looks great. works great. installed easily. (professionally installed for $65.) nice clean lines. easy to operate. hit the button once for one minute. hit it again for each additional minute.

High Power Unit cooks evenly
The Sharp microwave arrived in perfect shape and worked as soon as we plugged it in. The 1200 watt unit replaced an older 700 watt unit and cooks the food in half the time. The carousel cooks the food more evenly and the controls are easy to use. I would recommend this unit to everyone.

Breakroom favorite
We have 13 people that share this unit. It's a great microwave that consistantly holds-up to heavy use.

Sharp R-320 HQ microwave
This is an excellent microwave. Bought it for the color to match applicances and am very pleased with it. No problems at all.

Unreliable -- stay away!

UNRELIABLE -- I have had mine about 4 years. I had to have it repaired a couple of times under warranty, and then two more time that I paid for. Now it has failed yet again. If I were to repair it this time, my repair costs would exceed my purchase price.

INTERFERES WITH WIRELESS NETWORK -- when on, it brought my wireless networking essentially to a stop. The microwave it replaced has slightly more power, and has no discernible effect on my wireless network. For now, I am going back to that.

BOTTOM LINE -- I'm going back to my older microwave, and if I really do miss having one this big will buy something other than a Panasonic.

Too bad about the problems, because I like the large size (for large baking dish, or defrosting a good-sized roast), and (when it works) it cooks well. I just cannot see paying $60 or so per year to have it fixed (not to mention the inconvenience).

I'm SCARED to buy this
Based on the reviews I've read here, I am scared to buy this appliance! Based on the reviews I've read on other microwaves, I'm scared to buy ANY microwave!

It appears that QUALITY and LONGEVITY are not priorities of ANY manufacturer. I think they want you to buy a new (anything electronic) every year or two. Sorry (appliance manufacturer) - I'm not going there.

I don't have that kind of disposable income.

We have had two similar Panasonic ovens and I would be VERY concerned with durability on this one.
I have to note that I do not own this particular model. Models change from year to year, and the limitation of Amazon reviews is that they tend to be made by new owners.

Based on my experience with two predecessors to this oven, however, I want to leave potential buyers with a caveat:

The first lasted barely a year before it died: the oven stopped heating, and the timer was messed up.

Because we liked the large size and other features, we purchased the next year's model. This one lasted four years, but this morning it died the same death--would only set for a few seconds, generated no heat during that time.

Our previous microwaves (Quasar and Sharp) lasted for over ten years, and based on the similar symptoms on the two Panasonic models, I just wanted to caution buyers that this may not be the best oven available.

happy with this microwave
I'm happy with my purchase I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a new microwave it has a lot of nice features my old micro wave did not have. I'm totally satisfied

5 STARS for a good product at a great price
I bought this good quality, easy to use, name brand microwave to replace a similar one from another manufacturer that finally died after more than a decade of daily use. Will this one last that long? I'd say, as long as the keypad survives (which is doubtful with daily use of the 30 second feature) this versatile, easy to program microwave will continue to be the quick little work-horse of the kitchen. Well written, easy to understand bi-lingual instructions are included and I was pleasantly surprised to get this much needed replacement delivered to me the following day without requesting (or paying for or being charged) any kind of special speedy delivery. Amazon.com, Target and this versatile little work-horse all get 5 stars in my book.

Ours just blew up
I saw it arc. BOOF! No reason, no misuse. Just a big flash of blue light.

It lasted only 1 1/2 years. I will not buy any more Emerson products.
